It's a Family Affair
Family Motivates Nick Miller to Buy Weed Man Franchise
This article originally appeared in The Daily Herald, Provo, Utah.
After working in landscaping for many years, one Santaquin resident wanted to start a business that would not only allow him the opportunity to work with customers year after year, but also would allow his children to eventually be involved in the family business.
Nick Miller purchased a franchise of Weed Man and opened the doors in February. Weed Man is a network of locally owned and operated lawn care professions that provide a variety of services including fertilization, weed control and pest management services. Weed Man is now the leading franchised lawn care company in the green industry through the United States and Canada.
"I am really excited to have a business that can help customers in Utah County," Miller said. "So far the response has been great and we are hoping by mid-June to have over 300 customers."
Miller also is excited to work with the community and develop relationships with his customers.
"One part of landscaping that I missed was getting to know your customer," Miller said. "As a landscaper, you usually came in once or twice, did the job and then didn't go back. With Weed Man, we will have the opportunity to have repeat customers, who we can get to know and whose yards we can take care of year after year."
Miller is also looking to the future and hopes to involve his young children in the business one day.
"I have three kids; a 6-year-old, a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old," he said. "My oldest two children are girls and one part of the business that I really liked was that it could be run by women. There are currently female-owned franchises of Weed Man and I wanted to do something that could involve my family. The heaviest thing we have to lift is a 50-pound bag of fertilizer, so this business is definitely more female friendly than landscaping was."
Currently, Miller employs seven individuals who travel from Lehi to Santaquin to help locals maintain a beautiful yard.
With a young family and many responsibilities, Miller balances his time well and hopes to grow his business with an effective business plan and budget.
"I get a lot of help from my wife," Miller said. "She does so much for the family side of our life and that allows me to better manage my time with the business and work."
